[ New NORM v. 1.1 | original version (v. 0.9) ] The Vowel Normalization and Plotting Suite

THIS IS THE OLD VERSION OF NORM. UNLESS YOU ARE HERE FOR A REASON, YOU SHOULD USE CURRENT VERSION.

New NORM v. 1.0: We are pleased to release a new - completely rewritten - version of NORM.
Try it out: Click here to use the new NORM. Also, if you use R, be sure to check out the new vowels R package... --Tyler, Feb. 14th, 2008

1. Select the vowel data file:

[ Download Templates ]

Vowel Data File:
Ensure that the file is in a tab-delimited text format and that it matches the format of our Template; see How to Use NORM for help.

2. Select two normalization methods:

Left Method:   Right Method:

For information about each method, visit the Methods page. Not all methods are equally appropriate for all vowel datasets. Note that, even though the primary proponent(s) for each method are listed, that a number of the methods are slightly modified from their original, published versions. Explications of these modifications are also described on the Methods page.

3. Select options:
Plot all speakers on the same plot?
Uses color to differentiate speakers; otherwise generates mean plots in black & white and individual values plots in color to differentiate vowels.

Generate smaller in-line plots?
Makes slightly smaller plot JPEGs for viewing with smaller monitors.

Scale normalized results to Hz? Important!: make sure that you have read the About Scaling section.
Only for Lobanov, Nearey, and Watt & Fabricius methods which otherwise result in non-Hz or non-Barks values.

4. Click the button to upload your file for normalization:
